Bernstein-Burkley, P.C. Managing Partner Appointed to Bankruptcy Judge Merit Selection Committee
Bernstein-Burkley, P.C. Managing Partner Bob Bernstein has been selected to play a key role in selecting the Western District of Pennsylvania’s next bankruptcy judge. One of nine prominent attorneys appointed by Chief Judge Edward R. Becker of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit to serve on a Merit Selection Committee, Bernstein will join his colleagues in recommending candidates for the Western District’s Bankruptcy judgeship vacancy.
The role of the Merit Selection Committee is to review applications, conduct interviews, and recommend individuals whose character, experience, ability and commitment to equal justice under the law fully qualify them to serve as a United States bankruptcy judge. This is the second time Bernstein has been selected to assist with the selection of a bankruptcy judge.
“It is an honor to be appointed again to serve the court in this important capacity,” Bernstein said. “With the increase in bankruptcy court filings and the complexity of matters before the court, it is now more important than ever that the most experienced, skilled and committed candidates continue to be selected to preside over bankruptcy court proceedings.”
Bernstein holds the rare distinction of being Board Certified in both Creditors’ Rights and Business Bankruptcy by the American Board of Certification. With a practice concentrating in bankruptcy and commercial law, Bernstein has extensive experience in several bankruptcy courts in bankruptcy matters, including representing secured and unsecured creditors, trustees and companies reorganizing under Chapter 11. Bernstein also heads the firm’s Preference Defense Team.
Bernstein has served as President of the Commercial Law League of America, North America’s oldest creditors’ rights organization, and is Treasurer of the American Board of Certification, the country’s only Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights Attorney board-certification organization. He is an active member of the Allegheny County Bar Association, where he serves as Vice-Chair of the Professional Ethics Committee and is a member of the Finance Committee. He is past chair of the Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section and of the Technology Utilization Committee.
