Ed Hirshberg is an Associate in Bernstein-Burkley’s Litigation practice group.

Ed’s legal experience includes a broad focus in litigation, ranging from property tax assessment litigation to real estate, mortgage and title claims litigation, representing one of the largest title insurers in the county. Ed also has experience assessing and handling insurance claims, foreclosure proceedings, eminent domain matters, class-action suits, breach of contract suits, personal injury actions, toxic-tort defense, commercial lease disputes, and creditor’s rights issues.

As an extern with the Honorable Joy Flowers Conti in the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, Ed assisted in drafting opinions regarding the Federal Employers Liability Act and a wrongful death suit under 42 U.S.C § 1983, a civil action for deprivation of rights.

Representing both property owners and taxing bodies before the Allegheny County Board of Property Assessments and the Allegheny County Board of Viewers, Ed participated in hundreds of assessment hearings, resulting in the determination of over one-hundred million dollars in residential, commercial, and industrial property value. On behalf of various taxing bodies, Ed successfully challenged the tax-exempt status of a local hospital and, further, has overseen litigation determining the property tax-liability of a local steel mill, an industrial research and development facility, several local golf courses, and numerous office complexes and “big box” retail buildings. Ed has an extensive background in real-estate matters. Prior to beginning his legal career, he worked as a multi-million dollar producing Realtor and, later, a top mortgage officer with a national bank.

In addition to his current legal work, Ed manages an independent real estate portfolio, purchasing and controlling residential properties.
